Squadroll: Always Putting In Work

Spread the love

Squadroll is a three man crew that truly personifies Durban’s raw and undefined rap scene, as they are skilled in delivery and content. Tykun, Tony32 and Supasta came together in 2006, and haven’t looked back since. Their passion, dedication and hard work have allowed them to share the stage with AKA, Zakwe, Duncan, 340 ml and Tbo Touch.

In the year 2012, they were named Best Rap Crew at the Original Material Awards (OMAs) – Durban’s premier and only hip hop and rap awards ceremony, which lead to local media coverage and a feature on HYPE Magazine’s ‘Newcomer’s Delight’.

The release of the crew’s third mixtape ‘Dinner Time’ proved to be their first big move as it earned them much airplay on popular stations – Ukhozi  FM, Metro FM, Gagasi Fm, Durban Youth Radio, and Inanda FM.

We had a brief chat with Tykun about the team’s upcoming fourth mixtape, and the music video they just dropped, this is what went down.

Simply Real: Style Nedwangu, talk to us about that.

Tykun: The guy that designed Cassper’s cover did the single artwork, firstly, which is cool. And the single is produced by Kali Beats, our regular guy, but it;s very different from our normal style, and that’s exciting.

SR: And what exactly is your style?

Tykun: Our style is old skool grimniv beats, very gangsta.

SR: And this upbeat, new skool?

Tykun: Definitely New Skool, yeah. And the concept behind it is that we got swag and style, you know. Making heads turn no matter where we at.

SR: And the video y’all just shot is it for Style Nedwangu?

Tykun: Nah, it’s a track titled Respect, and was shot by VeeArt Media – and award winning UK producer. The reception was good; over 1k views in 3 days.

SR: For an underground, Durban based crew that really is amazing. How is the tape coming along?

Tykun: We’re currently working on a lot of music and sending it to our followers – not fans. The relationships we’ve built them are very personal, we interact daily, and often we let them decide which track should be released. So calling them fans just seems so rude. But as far as the tape is concerned, we are taking our time; the project is still very much in the foundation phase. But in the mean time, Style Nendwangu is available for download and that’s what we’re pushing now.
