If two FIFA World Cup 2026 opening performances weren’t enough, Tyla added another milestone on Saturday, July 13, 2026. The South African star became the first African artist to win at the Music Awards Japan, held at SGC Hall, Toyota Arena in Tokyo.

‘Chanel’ takes top international prize:
Tyla’s hit Chanel won Best International R&B/Contemporary Song. The track has been on heavy rotation across Japan, building her into a household name there.
Whilst the song out plays several others – the win wasn’t easily handed to her. Japanese Billboard metrics are tough: they factor in radio airplay, CD sales, downloads, streaming, music video views, karaoke data, plus top user-generated content in the category. That meant Chanel beat out heavy competition:
- Upside Down (Candy Crush)” – Thundercat
- Play This Song – Mariah Carey feat. Anderson .Paak
- Jealous Type & “Gorgeous” – Doja Cat
- Summertime Blue – Norah Jones & John Legend
Beating these names on the charts is a clear signal: Tyla’s sound travels far beyond SA borders.
| What’s next for Joburg’s ‘Pretty Girl’?
Tyla isn’t slowing down. She’s set to voice a new character, “Inflatable Flamingo”, in Disney & Pixar’s Toy Story 5.
From World Cup stages to Japanese award shows to Hollywood animation — SA talent is showing up everywhere.
Congratulations to Tyla. If talent and hard work is the formula, expect more awards on the way ![]()
